About AI Ready NZ

Helping Aotearoa New Zealand become AI ready

Artificial intelligence is changing how we work, learn, create and make decisions. The technology is moving quickly. For many people and organisations, clear and practical guidance is not keeping pace.

AI Ready NZ exists to close that gap

We are building a national AI capability platform to help individuals, businesses, educators, schools and communities use AI with confidence, good judgement and a clear understanding of both its possibilities and its limits.

Purpose

Why AI Ready NZ exists

AI is already becoming part of everyday life, but access to the technology is not the same as having the capability to use it well.

People need more than lists of tools or one-off demonstrations. They need practical ways to:

  • understand what AI can and cannot do;
  • identify where it is genuinely useful;
  • check outputs and recognise mistakes;
  • protect privacy, security and human judgement;
  • apply AI in their own work, learning and community;
  • keep adapting as the technology changes.

Without that support, the benefits of AI will be unevenly distributed. Some people and organisations will move forward quickly while others are left uncertain, dependent or excluded.

AI Ready NZ is being developed so more New Zealanders can participate actively in the changes ahead—not simply consume technology designed elsewhere.

Definition

What “AI ready” means

Being AI ready does not mean using AI for everything.

It means having the confidence and judgement to decide:

  • when AI is useful;
  • when it is not;
  • how to ask better questions;
  • how to verify what it produces;
  • what information should not be shared;
  • when a person must remain accountable;
  • how AI can support rather than weaken learning, expertise and critical thinking.

AI readiness is a practical capability. It develops through guided learning, real use, reflection and continued practice.

Platform

What we are building

AI Ready NZ is being developed as a connected set of practical pathways rather than a static information website.

Personalised pathways

AI Ready Profiles and assessments will help people and organisations understand their current capability, goals and next steps.

An AI Guide

A digital mentor will provide contextual guidance for individuals, educators, learners, parents, businesses and community organisations.

A continuously updated Learning Hub

Plain-language resources, examples and activities will evolve alongside the technology.

Education support

Dedicated pathways will help teachers, learners, parents and school leaders adopt AI while strengthening critical thinking, verification and responsible practice.

Business capability

Businesses will be able to move from initial understanding to opportunity assessment, practical implementation and ongoing capability development.

Community participation

Libraries, councils, iwi, Pacific organisations, disability organisations, seniors and youth groups will be able to access resources shaped around their communities.

Research and measurement

Over time, the AI Ready Index and Research Hub will help build a clearer picture of AI readiness across individuals, organisations, regions and New Zealand as a whole.

Principles

Our principles

Practical

Guidance should help people do something useful. We favour clear examples, real activities and workable next steps over abstract commentary.

Human-centred

AI should strengthen human capability, not replace judgement, responsibility, relationships or meaningful participation.

Independent

AI Ready NZ is intended to help people make informed choices, not push a single technology provider, product or platform.

Evidence-led

Guidance should reflect credible research, real-world experience and what is actually happening in New Zealand.

Accessible by design

Resources should be understandable and usable by people with different backgrounds, confidence levels, abilities and access needs.

Honest about uncertainty

AI changes quickly. We will distinguish established guidance from emerging practice and be open about risks, limitations and unanswered questions.

Capability over dependency

The goal is to help people think and act more effectively for themselves—not make them permanently dependent on an AI tool, consultant or platform.

Participation

A national platform, built through participation

AI readiness cannot be created by one organisation working alone.

AI Ready NZ is designed to bring together educators, technologists, researchers, businesses, community leaders, public organisations and people with direct lived experience. The platform will grow through practical programmes, shared resources, research, local activity and feedback from the people using it.

Our ambition is national. Our approach is grounded: test ideas in real settings, learn from what happens, improve the framework and share what works.

Stewardship

Founding steward

AI Ready NZ was initiated by Node, an Auckland-based technology and community organisation working across artificial intelligence, education, research, practical implementation and creative participation.

Node provides the founding environment and early capability behind the initiative. AI Ready NZ is being developed to reach well beyond Node and become a useful, trusted platform for communities and organisations throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.

Transparency

Governance, contributors and funding

AI Ready NZ is in development. Its long-term governance and participation model will be designed to support trust, transparency and broad national relevance.

As the platform grows, this page will publish:

  • governance and advisory arrangements;
  • contributors and delivery partners;
  • research and evidence standards;
  • funding sources and material commercial relationships;
  • privacy, data-handling and human-oversight practices;
  • how organisations and communities can contribute.

We will not present proposed relationships as established partnerships. Material funding or commercial interests that could influence the platform will be disclosed.

Ambition

The future we are working toward

We want every New Zealander to have a practical path into an AI-enabled future—whether they are a student learning how to verify an answer, a teacher redesigning an activity, a parent starting a conversation at home, a business improving a workflow or a community helping people gain confidence with unfamiliar technology.

AI Ready NZ is not about encouraging more AI use for its own sake. It is about building the knowledge, judgement and participation needed to use AI well.
